Water Activities
Akumal Bay - Swim with the turtles
Akumal Bay is one of the busiest beaches for swimming, but it is also one of the top places in the world to swim with the turtles in their natural environment. You will need be part of a guided tour to preserve this beautiful area.
XCalak
My favorite place in Mexico to snorkel. It is one of the few reefs in Mexico that is still unspoiled and natural. If you are a serious snorkeler, then this is a must see. It is about a 4 and 1/2 hour drive from Myoli, and is close to the Belize border.
Half Moon Bay, Akumal
This is a relaxing place to visit and it has a nice reef that you can swim to. This area is not crowded as it has a rocky entry and is not the best for swimming, but good for snorkeling. There are some really nice restaurants along the beach, and my favorites are La Lunita and La Buena Vida.
Puerto Morelos
The beach at Puerto Morelos is a dream for those people that like to walk on a beach and swim at different locations along the way. It extends for a few kilometers towards the north, and there is so much room, you can be sure to find a secluded spot all your own. The water is usually calm as it is protected by a reef just 400 meters from shore. And you never know when you will come upon some free entertainment.
Yal-ku lagoon
This is a one of a kind lagoon where the fresh water from the underground rivers meets the ocean. This inlet has shallower waters so you can see all the beautiful fish with vibrant colors. If the day is too windy to go swimming anywhere else, this sheltered area is the place to go.
XPU-HA Beach
XPU-HA Beach is in Puerto Aventuras and is about a 30 minute drive south towards Tulum. It is one of the most beautiful beaches with white sand and turquoise water. There is very little undertow and is quite safe for swimming and snorkeling.
Cozumel
Cozumel is absolutely worth the trip on the ferry. It has crystal clear water and some of the best snorkeling and diving in Mexico. My favorite place to stay is at the El Cozumeleno which has good snorkeling just off shore. Also, try the water between the Money Bar and the Fiesta Americana Hotel, that is one of my favorites. Be careful, the currents can be very strong.
Downtown Playa Del Carmen
There are numerous beaches and beach clubs in downtown Playa Del Carmen including right behind the iconic arch. There are also a number of beach clubs that charge entrance fees that partially go towards a credit for food and drink. These beach clubs usually have different types of water sports available.
What's in the Area
Xcalacoco Public Beach
Xcalacoco Beach is a world class beach, only a 10 minute drive from Myoli. It is a 42 km stretch of beach with clear water for swimming, snorkeling and all types of water activities.
